Hybrid Cars
Hi there 🙋♂️today in this article we will try to understand about Hybrid Cars. We will also try to learn the working of Hybrid cars.
In this article we will also discuss about types and advantages of Hybrid cars.
A hybrid electric vehicle is one, that uses two or more distinct types of power, such as submarines, that use diesel when surfaced and batteries when submerged. Other means to store energy include pressurized fluid in hydraulic hybrids.
Hybrid powertrains are designed to switch from one power source to another. This is done to maximize both fuel efficiency and energy efficiency. In hybrid electric cars, for instance, the electric motor is more efficient at producing torque, while the combustion engine is better for maintaining high speed. Improved efficiency, lower emissions, and reduced running costs are three primary benefits of hybridization.
Hybrid electric vehicles are powered by an internal combustion engine and one or more electric motors. These motors uses energy stored in batteries. A hybrid electric vehicle cannot be plugged in to charge the battery. Instead, the battery is charged through regenerative braking and by the internal combustion engine.
How hybrid-electric vehicles work
Hybrids-Electric vehicles (HEVs) combine the advantage of gasoline engines and electric motors. The key areas for efficiency or performance gains are regenerative braking, dual power sources, and less idling.
Regenerative braking - The electric motor normally converts electricity into physical motion. Used in reverse as a generator, it can also convert physical motion into electricity. This both slows the car (braking) and recharges (regenerates) the batteries.
Dual power - Power can come from either the engine, motor, or both depending on driving circumstances. Additional power to assist the engine in accelerating or climbing might be provided by the electric motor. Or more commonly, a smaller electric motor provides all of the power for low-speed driving conditions and is augmented by the engine at higher speeds.
Automatic start/shutoff - It automatically shuts off the engine when the vehicle comes to a stop and restarts it when the accelerator is pressed down. This automation is much simpler with an electric motor. Also, see dual power above.
How Do Hybrid Cars Work?
Following is a brief overview of the mechanisms to understand how a hybrid car works –
1. Pulling Away From the Stop
The car is moved initially with the help of an electric motor, which draws on the hybrid battery for power.
2. Normal Cruising
When cruising at high speeds, both the electric motor and petrol engine can work together or independently.
3. Massive Acceleration
During massive acceleration and high speeds, the power provided to the car comes from the petrol engine.
4. Braking and Deceleration
When slowing down the vehicle and braking it, kinetic energy turns into electric energy to refill the battery pack. Also the car’s electric motor goes into a reverse mode upon applying brakes, causing its wheels to slow down.
Types of Hybrid Cars
Mild Hybrids
Mild hybrid is one of the newest innovations in hybrid technology. The mild hybrid system provides a little boost to the vehicle's gasoline engine, usually when the car is accelerated from a dead stop.
These engines do not require to be plugged in and are found in 48-volt electric systems since they acquire energy from the combined power of a gasoline engine and regenerative braking.
Some common mild hybrid systems are eAssist, eTorque and EQ Boost.
Full Hybrids
Full hybrids sport both electrical components and a gasoline engine. However, the electric component in hybrid cars can handle more workload than that in a mild hybrid.
There are two types of full hybrid cars, generally known as parallel and series hybrids.
1. Parallel Hybrids:
Parallel hybrids are those which uses both the electric motor as well as engine to propel the wheels. Also, transmission can be manual, automatic and continuously variable.
Here, the main factors that determine how a parallel hybrid will accelerate, sound, and feel are the gasoline engine's transmission type and size.
2. Series Hybrids:
Here, the driving experience is more likely to an electric car since an electric motor is the sole source of power.
The gasoline engine is present in this mode only to charge its battery. Also, the electric generator is driven by the combustion engine instead of the driving wheels, resulting in a smoother
An example of a series hybrid car is the BMW i3, which also comes under electric hybrid cars.
Plug-in hybrid
When researching what a hybrid car is, you should be aware of the term "plug-in".
Like an electric car, a plug-in hybrid vehicle also has a large battery pack that needs to be charged via an external source providing all-electric drive for approximately 15 to 55 miles. The car reverts to a conventional parallel hybrid once all electrical energy has been used.
Some examples of plug-in hybrid cars are the BYD F3DM,Toyota Prius and BMW i8.

Advantages of hybrid car
Environment friendly
One of the biggest advantages of a hybrid car over a gasoline-powered car is that it runs cleaner and gets better gas mileage, which makes it more environmental friendly. A hybrid vehicle runs on a dual-powered engine (gasoline engine and electric motor) which cuts fuel consumption and saves energy.
Financial Benefits
Hybrid cars get a congestion charge that comes in the form of a smaller amount spent on fuel.
less dependence on fossil fuels
A hybrid car requires less fuel to run, which means fewer emissions and less dependence on fossil fuels.
regenerative braking system
Every time you apply the brakes while driving a hybrid car, braking helps recharge your battery a bit. It automatically reduces charging time, and increase charge in battery.
