Introduction
Tata Motors is a leading automobile company in India which has been a part of people's lives for over 70 years. The company has a variety of models to offer and is constantly innovating with new technology. In line with this, Tata Motors launched its first electric vehicle (EV) in 2018, called the Tata Tigor EV. As part of the company’s commitment to sustainability, Tata Motors has now launched the Tata Nexon EV. The Tata Nexon EV is India’s first electric SUV and is a result of the company’s dedication to provide cleaner and greener mobility solutions.
Design and Features
The Tata Nexon EV is based on the company’s popular compact SUV Nexon. The car has a sporty and modern design, with the signature grille and slim LED headlights. The EV version comes with a few distinguishable design elements such as a blue accent on the grill, electric badge on the tailgate, and a unique alloy wheel design.
The interior of the Nexon EV looks identical to the Nexon’s petrol and diesel variants, however, it has got some noticeable changes such as a new rotary knob gear selector and a new TFT instrument panel that displays all the relevant data related to the powertrain.
Additionally, the EV version comes with an eight-inch floating touchscreen infotainment system, automatic climate control, and a panoramic sunroof. The car is well-equipped with safety features such as six airbags, hill descent control, electronic stability control (ESC), and many more.
Performance
The Tata Nexon EV is powered by a 30.2 kWh battery pack which is connected to an electric motor producing 127 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque. The battery pack is liquid-cooled and features a liquid heating function as well, which helps in maintaining the battery's temperature to ensure better performance.
The car can reach 0-100 km/h in just 9.9 seconds and has a top speed of 120 km/h, making it one of the most powerful and fastest electric cars in its segment.
The car offers two drive modes, namely, Drive and Sport. In the drive mode, the car delivers a more relaxed driving experience, while in the sport mode, the car offers a more engaging and exciting driving experience. The Nexon EV comes with a single-speed automatic transmission which adds to the convenience of driving an electric car.
The range of the car is a significant factor for any electric car, and Tata Motors has worked on this aspect to ensure the best possible range for the Nexon EV. The car has a certified range of 312 kilometers (as per ARAI), making it one of the few electric cars in the country that offers a range of more than 300 km on a single charge. In real-world conditions, one can expect a range between 200-250 km depending on the driving conditions and terrain.
Charging
Tata Nexon EV offers two charging options, a standard 15A domestic socket, which takes around 8-9 hours for a full charge, and a 25 kW DC fast charger, which can charge up to 80% in just 60 minutes. Tata Motors has also set up a network of charging stations called Tata Power EZ Charge, in collaboration with Tata Power, where Nexon EV owners can charge their cars free of cost.
Pricing
The Tata Nexon EV is priced at ₹13.99 lakh for the XM variant, ₹14.99 lakh for the XZ+ variant, and ₹15.99 lakh for the XZ+ Lux variant (all prices ex-showroom, India). The car is eligible for a FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of (Hybrid &) Electric Vehicles) subsidy of ₹1.5 lakh for private buyers and has a 5-year/1.5 lakh km warranty, which is a segment-first offer.
Tata Motors is offering a subscription plan called the “Tata Nexon EV Subscription Plan” for those who do not want to buy the car outright. The plan offers flexibility with no long-term commitment and includes a comprehensive insurance package, routine maintenance, free charging, and more.
